Westport Wander

A WALK THROUGH THE RAIN

The day I bought this yarn in Westport, it rained. But I had my umbrella, and I didn't mind.

I spent two or three hours simply walking through town, taking it all in. The colorful buildings, the shopfronts, the people, the streets, the river — all of it felt lively and welcoming.

Westport has an unusual character. Its town center was deliberately planned in the Georgian period, with an ordered street layout, colorful buildings, the Octagon, and the Carrowbeg River running through the heart of town.

The next day, I wandered again. I went into shops, watched people coming and going, looked closely at the buildings and their colors, and let myself enjoy being somewhere without needing to hurry. That feeling stayed with me.

A LITTLE COLOR FOR YOUR FEET

The yarn I chose was a beautiful yellow — but not the bright yellow of sunshine and not the golden yellow of gorse.

It sits somewhere between a vibrant mustard and a softened golden orange, with little flecks of purple, red, green, and other colors woven through it. Almost like a tiny piece of tweed.

I turned it into a pair of slippers that hug the foot, with a strap across the bridge for a little extra character and security.

And then there were the buttons.

While I was in Recess, I found two beautiful handmade clay buttons with little dark, earthy tones running through them. When I bought them, the woman who made them told me they were brand new and that I was the very first person to buy them.

I loved that.

So those two buttons came home with me and eventually became part of these slippers.

The bright wool. The earthy handmade buttons.

The rain. The colorful streets. The wandering.

All of it feels like Westport to me. A little lively. A little unexpected. And very easy to love.
